Today, surface modification methods involve many challenging requirements such as the need for chemical-free processing, wettability, superhydrophobicity, or high surface roughness. Laser micro-nano fabrications, due to their contactless processing and exceptional modeling capabilities, are a potential way to overcome these challenges (Liu et al. 2020). Metal surface properties play a significant role in a range of biological events, interacting with cells and stimulating morphological changes including cell adhesion, adhesion, and cell differentiation and tissue formation (de Oliveira et al. 2023). In this respect, surface properties, such as topography and hydrophobicity, play a crucial role in biofilm development. In general, due to its flexibility and wide range of applications, laser processing is one of the most promising tools for the production of customized surface topographies. In high-power diode laser (HPDL) processing based on laser parameters, the top surface of the metal undergoes a surface melting where a microstructure with homogeneously distributed secondary phases is observed, the adjacent layer is formed by exhibiting selective laser surface melting where only the secondary phases are modified. Thus, laser-induced periodic surface structure, involving surface melting and texturing, increases hardness and wear resistance. The periodic surface structure of melting zones separated by micro-grooves stimulates the attachment of living cells to the melting zone, while the regions surrounding the micro-grooves will be devoid of cells. Semiletov et al. (2023) aimed to create superhydrophobic surfaces by modifying aluminum alloy surfaces with organic acids after applying laser irradiation. The hydrophobic properties of the surfaces they obtained were greatly increased by laser application, and they also achieved very high performance in their anticorrosive properties. Therefore, literature reviews indicate that laser applications do not only affect the superhydrophobic or superwetability properties of the surface, but also that the application conditions are reflected in the antifouling and anticorrosive properties. In this study, laser treatments were applied to the surface of stainless steel (SS316L). The surfaces of bare SS and laser-modified SS (SS/L) coupons were examined with digital photography, SEM-EDX, contact angle, AFM, and LSV analyses. In addition, the prepared coupons were left in the coastal area of Arsuz at a depth of 1.5-2.0 m from the surface for 10 days, and their structural properties (digital photography, SEM-EDX, AFM), antifouling properties (crystal violet staining, fluorescence microscopy imaging after DAPI staining), and anticorrosion performance were examined using open circuit potential monitoring, impedance, and Tafel measurements.
