In this paper, the influence of zwitterionic surfactant on the physical properties of PbS thin films was investigated. PbS films were produced by CBD method in the presence of zwitterionic surfactant (cocamidopropyl betaine) at different levels. The structure, surface morphology and topography, optical and electrical properties of the obtained PbS layers were characterized by using XRD, FTIR, SEM, SPM, UV–vis spectroscopy, and four-probe apparatus. SPM analysis showed that the use of different amounts of surfactant during the PbS deposition process was involved in the formation of decreasing surface roughness. According to the UV–vis measurements, band gaps of the PbS coatings increased from 1.84 to 2.40 eV with increasing of surfactant amount. This study revealed that more attention should be paid on the influence of cocamidopropyl betaine zwitterionic surfactant on the PbS and other metal chalcogenides for the future production of the semiconductor layers and the absorber materials.
