The maritime sector is
considered one of the cornerstones of the Turkish economy with its strategic
location connecting Europe and Asia and its long-standing maritime traditions.
Despite its importance, the sector is often criticized for its difficult and
sometimes adverse working conditions. This study addresses the main problems
faced by maritime workers in Turkey, including long working hours, occupational
health and safety concerns, low wages, limited social benefits and regulatory
deficiencies. The quantitative analysis uses the micro dataset of the Turkish Statistical Institute
(TUIK). In this way, it attempts to explain the negative aspects of working
life in the sector.
