Özet

Hawthorn is a popular fruit species because its fruits and leaves are rich in secondary metabolites that benefit health. Hawthorn breeding studies mainly aim to develop cultivars with large fruits, high eating quality, are productive, and have a high tolerance to diseases and pests. A new hawthorn cultivar, ‘Sultan’, was released from the hawthorn selection program conducted at the Department of Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Hatay Mustafa Kemal, Türkiye and was registered in 2023. This study examined plant, fruit quality, and leaf characteristics of the ‘Sultan’ cultivar and included eleven-year data. ‘Sultan’ blooms relatively early and its fruits mature at the end of the second week of September in the climatic conditions of the eastern Mediterranean region of Türkiye. The cultivar is a medium-vigor cultivar that spreads growth, produces thornless shoots, is productive, and has outstanding fruit quality. Its light green fruit was firm and had excellent eating quality due to its high soluble solids content and acidity. The fruit flavor is pleasantly aromatic. Fruit size was large, with an average weight of 16 g, and the edible fruit ratio was %90. As a result, ‘Sultan’ can be an important genetic resource for cultivation and breeding studies with its yield and fruit quality characteristics.
