Özet

This study was carried out on Anatolian ground squirrels (Spermophilus xanthophrymnus) which were brought as dead to our Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Erciyes University. No living animals were used for this study and corpses were used because of respect for natural life. Our research was carried out in the form of dissection, measurement and photographing. Although the anal glands are present in both sexes, both adult and juvenile, they are best developed in adult males. Anatolian ground squirrels have three anal glands. They have flat-topped, straight-sided nipples that protruding from the anus. The glands were located ventrally and bilaterally on both sides of the anus. It was seen to consist of three groups or independent openings, recesses or dead ends. The depth of the recesses opening outwards in the ventral and lateral of the anus is approximately 4.5 mm, and the diameter is approximately 2 mm. It has been determined that flexible and embossed outer openings can expand due to their flexible structure and it would be wrong to talk about a precise diameter. In freshly broughted cadavers, samples of glandulae anales apertures were also found to be large enough to cause the illusion that there were three anus. In addition to the macro-anatomical findings related to the recesses and gland structure, histology and SEM examinations will provide a better understanding of the species-specific characteristics of the anatomy of glandulae anales and may be beneficial in terms of animal behavior and social life
