A study focusing on the comparison of renal color-Doppler ultrasonography (CDU) and enhanced helical computerized tomography (CT) on the diagnosis of acute renal colic is proposed. It is reported that the use of CDU in patients with renal colic an pyelocaliectasis improves diagnostic accuracy. Color Doppler ultrasound provides functional parameters in patients with acute renal colic, improving diagnostic accuracy of standard ultrasound. Acute renal colic allows the detection of patients with obstruction and distinguish between obstructive and non-obstructive dilatation. Other findings of CDU in presence of renal stone are of limited interest in the decision making of acute colic and in distinguishing small stones from other small echogenic structures. The study also reports that CDU is an operator-dependent exam that improves ultrasonography in functional evaluation of the urinary tract in patients with unilateral acute renal colic.
