7. Çerçeve Programı Projesi, 2013 - 2016
Sharka, caused by the Plum Pox Virus
(PPV), is the most devastating disease problem for fruit
trees worldwide (quote recent FIGURES) and
has put the world fruit tree industry in
an extremely precarious position (quote recent FIGURES € for Europe at least). In
order for Europe to provide breeders with the tools to respond to this critical
situation the EC funded the “SharCo”
project (small Collaborative FP7 project) from 2008-2012. SharCo developed tools
and material (more details) to reduce the impact of sharka disease all over
Europe. At project end in 2012, part of the genetic tools and plant material
are ready for translation to other European Breeding programs and private
stakeholders such as SMEs. SharCo devoted part of its effort to the integrated
study of genetic resistance to PPV, thus developing molecular tools and
knowledge for implementation of marker assisted selection in apricot breeding
programs. The overall aim of MARS is thus to boost the production of sharka resistant Stone
Fruit cultivars by translating the efficient and reliable procedures of marker
assisted selection (MAS) conceived in SharCO to SMEs to enable targeted
selection of PPV resistant apricot cultivars all over Europe. This will enable
the European fruit breeding community.
