Abstract:

Olive fly, Bactrocera oleae (Gmelin) (Diptera: Tephritidae), is one of the important pests of olives in Turkey. The current study was conducted in 2015-2016 to determine the effectiveness of various attractants to control the olive fly on Gemlik and Ayvalık olive cultivars in Yassıca village of Ceyhan district of Adana province. Two types of traps were used during the first and the second years of the study. In the first year of the study, 500ml in size pet-bottle attractant traps were used for olive fly on two olive varieties. The study was conducted as randomized complete block desing with 12 replications and five treatments (0.2% ammonium carbonate (AC), 0.2% ammonium acetate (AA), 0.2% ammonium bicarbonate (AB) Diammonium phosphate (DAP), 0.2% ammonium bicarbonate (AB) + 0.2% ammonium acetate (AA)). The attractant traps were set up as one trap for every 3 olive trees on 22 July 2015 and removed on 20 October 2015. In the second year of the study, Decis type traps with attractant impregnated paper handkerchiefs were used on two olive varieties. The study was conducted as randomized complete block design with 5 replications and five treatments (olive fly pheromone, 0.2% spiroketal (1,7-dioxaspiro [5.5] undecane) (SP), 2.5% ammonium sulphate (AS), 2.5% ammonium carbonate (AC), 2.5% ammonium bicarbonate (AB) + 2.5% ammonium acetate (AA) and 2.5% diammonium phosphate (DAP). The traps were set up as one trap for every 3 olives trees on 29 July 2016 and removed on 22 October 2016. In addition, in both years, 2 ml of 10% propylene glycol in each pet bottle and 10 ml of 2% DDVP were added in each of 1.5 lt attractant bottle. The traps were hung at 1.5-2m high on southeastern side of the olive trees. Traps were brought to the laboratory and captured adults of olive fly during the harvest period of olives were counted. In the first year of the study, 260 olive fly adults were caught by pet-bottle attaractant traps on variety of Gemlik. The highest number of adults was caught by mixed AB + AA attractant traps. In the same year, 174 olive fly adults were captured by attractant traps on variety of Ayvalık. The highest number of adults was caught by mixed AB + AA attractant traps and AB attractant traps. In the second year of the study, 394 olive fly adults were caught by Decis type attaractant traps on variety of Gemlik. The highest number of adults was caught by AC attractant traps. In the same year, 306 olive fly adults were captured by Decis type attractant traps on variety of Ayvalık. The highest number of adults was caught by pheromone of olive fly 'SP' traps. Low percent (0.2 -0.5) of pheromone or attractant will be preferable for monitoring olive fly adults. However, it is suitable to use a ratio of 2.5-5 % of the attractant for controlling olive fly adults with mass trapping.
