Abstract:

Mediterranean fruit fly (Medfly), Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae), is one of the important pests of persimmon in Turkey. Studies were conducted in 2013-2014 to evaluate the population density and damage rates of Medfly at persimmon orchards in Defne (Harbiye), Antakya, Dörtyol and Belen districts of Hatay province. The study was carried out using the Econex yellow traps and pheromones (% 95 trimedlure (t-butyl 4 (or 5) chloro-2-methylcyclohexanecarboxylate) and DDVP. The pheromone traps were weekly checked and captured Medfly adults were counted and then cleaned. Pheromones in the yellow traps were replaced with the new ones in every 90 days. Damaged fruits were counted 5 times in 2013, and 7 times in 2014 by assessing 300 persimmon fruits randomly in each of the orchards, except the ones from the pheromone trap hanging tree. In 2013, a total of 13944 Medfly adults were caught by pheromone traps. A total of 3061 Medfly adults were caught by pheromone traps in Defne (Harbiye) district, and the highest number of Medfly adults caught was in 22 September, followed by 11-25 August, 6 October and 15 September. A total of 2923 Medfly adults were caught by pheromone traps in Bahçe49, and the highest number of Medfly adults caught was on 27 October, followed by 13-20 October and 3 November. A total of 1202 Medfly adults were caught by pheromone traps in Bahçe70, and the highest number of the Medfly adults caught was on 27 October, followed by 14 July, 13 October and 6 October. A total of 6758 Medfly adults were caught by pheromone traps in Belen district, and the highest number of the Medfly adults caught was on 4 August, followed by 11-18 August and 21 July. In 2014, a total of 10575 Medfly adults were caught by pheromone traps. A total of 4227 Medfly adults were caught by pheromone traps in Defne(Harbiye) district, and the highest number of Medfly adults caught was on 17 August, followed by 10, 24 and 31 August. A total of 1108 Medfly adults were caught by pheromone traps in Bahçe49, and the highest number of Medfly adults caught were on 22 September followed by 7 September. A total of 396 Medfly adults were caught by pheromone traps in Bahçe70, and the highest number of the Medfly adults caught was on 26 October, followed by 2 November. A total of 4844 Medfly adults were caught by pheromone traps in Belen district, and the highest number of the Medfly adults caught were on 10 August, followed by 17, 24 and 31 August. In 2013, the highest ratios of Medfly damaged fruits were observed on 20 October with 100 % in Bahçe49, 13 October with 82.7 % in Bahçe70, 20 October with 17.20% in Defne (Harbiye), 20 October with 3.35 % in Belen district. In 2014, the highest ratios of Medfly damaged fruits were observed on 2 November with 95 % in Bahçe49, with 85 % in Bahçe70, with 9.62% in Defne (Harbiye) and with 2.44 % in Belen district.
