Abstract:

Mediterranean fruit fly (Medfly), Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae) is one of the most important pests of citrus fruits in Turkey. The study was carried out in 2017-2018 to control and determine the damage ratio of Mediterranean fruit fly by mass-trapping in early varieties of mandarin orchards in Yüreğir district of Adana province, Turkey. Different numbers of Moskisan type traps (attractant+insecticide) were used depending on the orchard planted with either of Dobashi beni, En early, Miho wase and Primasol varieties. Moskisan traps were hanged on the southeast side of the trees, checked weekly and the captured Medfly adults were counted. Counts were carried out five times in 2017, six times in 2018, except the trap hanging trees, randomly chosen 30 fruits from 20 trees totaling to 600 fruits per variety were checked for Medfly damage and recorded. Furthermore, fruits dropped because of Medfly damage also were counted. In 2017, there were 185 Medfly adults caught by 120 traps in Dobashi Beni variety; 2,246 adults caught by 130 traps in En early variety; 333 adults caught by 100 traps in Miho Wase variery and 2910 adults caught by 100 traps in Primasol variety. In 2018, there were 161 Medfly adults caught by 100 traps in Dobashi Beni variety; 197 adults caught by 100 traps in En early variety; 74 adults caught by 100 traps in Miho Wase variety and 276 adults caught by 100 traps in Primasol variety. In 2017, the highest damage ratio of Medfly was recorded on Primasol variety on 11th October with 3.33%, followed by En early variety on 29th September with 2.33%, Miho wase variety on 11th October with 1.66%. There was not any Medfly damage observed on Dobashi beni variety. The highest average Medfly damage was on Primasol variety with 1.462%, followed by En early variety with 0.898%, Miho wase variety 0.464%. In 2018, the highest damage ratio of Medfly was recorded on Primasol variety on 20th September with 2.33%, followed by En early variety on 20th September with 1.5%, Dobashi beni variety on 24th October with 0.33%. There was not any Medfly damage observed on Miho wase variety. The highest average Medfly damage was on Primasol variety with 0.388%, followed by En early variety with 0.305%, and Dobashi variety with 0.047%.
