Abstract:Pomegranate is an important fruit crop widely grown in Turkey. The carob moth, Ectomyelois ceratoniae (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), is a serious pest on pomegranate in Turkey. Pheromone traps, baited with 1 mg Z9, E11-hexadecadienal, Z9-tetradecenal, Z9, E11,13-tetradecatrienal provide a reliable tool for detection and monitoring the carob moth in pomegranate orchards. In 2008-2009, the studies were conducted to evaluate distribution, population densities and damage levels of carob moth in at Alahan, Soğuksu and Delibekirli localities, totally nine pomegranate orchards (three from each locality) in Hatay province of Turkey.In 2008, the pheromone traps caught 518 carob moth males during the sampling periods. The highest carob moth caught by pheromone traps were on 29 August and 17 October. At these dates avarega temperatures and percent of huminity were 30,9°C, 60,7%; 19,1°C, 81,9%, respectively.In 2009, the pheromone traps caught 513 carob moth males during the sampling periods. The highest carob moth caught by pheromone traps were on 20 May,16 September, 7, 14, 21 and 28 October. At these dates averega temperatures and percent of humunity were 23,8°C, 56,2%; 26,8°C, 59,1%; 23,6°C, 60,1%; 22,6°C, 61,2%; 23,3°C, 52,7%; 18,3°C, 69,1%, respectively.In 2008, percent of damage by carob moth on pomegranate fruits were observed as DelibekirliA (40%), DelibekirliB (37%), DelibekirliC (35%), SoğuksuA (22%), SoğuksuB (20%), SoğuksuC (25%), AlahanA (13%), AlahanB (15%) and AlahanC (18%). In 2009, percent of damage by carob moth on pomegranate fruits were observed as DelibekirliC (35%), DelibekirliB (30%), DelibekirliA (15%), SoğuksuA (20%), SoğuksuB (32%), SoğuksuC (24%), AlahanA (15%), AlahanB (14%) and AlahanC (25%).In 2009, percent of mealybugs infestation on pomegranate fruit were estimated as DelibekirliA(30%), DelibekirliB(20%), DelibekirliC(10%), SoğuksuA(10%), SoğuksuB (25%), SoğuksuC (20%), AlahanA (10%), AlahanB (25%) and AlahanC (20%).According to results, the dates having the higher population densities may be better times for control measures for the carob moth on pomegranate in Hatay province of Turkey. These control measures may be insecticide application, mass-trapping or mating disruption by the pheromone traps. Mechanical control is important to decrease the population of the carob moth for the next year.
